چکیده

We study the interaction of a gravitational wave (GW) with a plasma that is strongly magnetized. The GW is considered a small disturbance, and the plasma is modeled by the general relativistic analogue of the induction equation of ideal MHD and the single fluid equations. The equations are derived without neglecting any of the non-linear interaction terms, and the non-linear equations are integrated numerically. We find that for strong magnetic fields of the order of 10 G the GW excites electromagnetic plasma waves very close to the magnetosonic mode. The magnetic and electric field oscillations have very high amplitude, and a large amount of energy is absorbed from the GW by the electromagnetic oscillations, of the order of 10 erg/cm in the case presented here. The absorbed energy is proportional to B 0 , with B0 the background magnetic field. The energization of the plasma takes place on fast time scales of the order of milliseconds. The amount of absorbed energy is comparable to the energies emitted in the most energetic astrophysical events, such as giant flares on magnetars and possibly even short Gamma ray bursts (GRB), for which the mechanism analyzed here also has the fast time-scales required.

Gravitational waves in magnetized relativistic plasmas

We study the propagation of gravitational waves (gw) in a uniformly magnetized plasma at arbitrary angles to the magnetic field. No a priori assumptions are made about the temperature, and we consider both a plasma at rest and a plasma flowing out at ultra-relativistic velocities. In the 3+1 orthonormal tetrad description, we find that all three fundamental low-frequency plasma wave modes are e...

Resonant interaction between gravitational waves, electromagnetic waves and plasma flows

In magnetized plasmas gravitational and electromagnetic waves may interact coherently and exchange energy between themselves and with plasma flows. We derive the wave interaction equations for these processes in the case of waves propagating perpendicular respectively parallel with the plasma background magnetic field. In the latter case, the electromagnetic waves are taken to be circularly pol...

The equations are specified to two different cases, first to Cartesian coordinates and a constant background magnetic fields...

Waves in strongly magnetized relativistic plasmas: generally covariant approach.

A dispersion relation for long waves in strongly magnetized multifluid plasma in a curved spacetime is derived in a covariant form. A generally covariant form for the ray equations is obtained. The results are applicable to ray propagation in relativistic plasmas in the vicinity of strongly gravitating (black holes) or rapidly rotating (pulsars) systems.

Indirect Visibility of Gravitational Waves in Magnetohydrodynamic Plasmas

We propose a mechanism to make gravitational waves (GWs) visible in the electromagnetic domain. Gravitational waves that propagate through a strongly magnetized plasma interact with the plasma through its anisotropic stress-energy tensor and excite magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave modes. In catastrophic events such as the merger of a double neutron star binary, a large fraction of the total bindi...
